Disciplining the Mind

1 Chronicles 29:12 – In thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

The mind is so connected to the entire body that it must be occupied with good thoughts or we will surely suffer and become corrupt. We must always walk in the Spirit and remove our thoughts from the flesh, which is the temptations of the world that would draw us away from Christ. The flesh loves to sin against God so to please the flesh and not the Spirit who is after the things of God.

Romans 8:5-6 – For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

The mind is a battle field where the powers of darkness are constantly trying to gain victory over the mind, which will prepare the way for the heart to become corrupt; and then the fruits of darkness will be seen through the lives of those who are yielding to those wicked powers. We must learn to set our affections on the things of God and not on the things of the earth that appeal to the flesh, which separates us from our Creator.

Colossians 3:2 – Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Man has the power to regulate and control the workings of the mind, and give direction to the current of his thoughts. But this requires greater effort than we can make in our own strength. We must stay our minds on God, if we would have right thoughts and proper subjects for meditation. Our minds must become holy unto the Lord if we would expect to be holy for the Lord. This is our reasonable service to give our lives and our temples to the service of God.

Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.

Very few realize that it is a duty to exercise control over our thoughts and imaginations.

2 Corinthians 10:5 – Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Many of us striving commandment keeping children know and understand, we can see how it is very difficult in these last days to keep the undisciplined mind fixed upon profitable subjects with all the temptations in the world, but we must, especially in a world that is full of sickness and diseases that weaken the body even more. We can see how many things in this world are besetting the lives of billions today, but regardless of all that is going on in the world, we must fight and strive and contend for victory.

Jude 1:3– Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

We must meet the enemy head on through the power of God and control our thoughts by daily reading His Word and fixing our thoughts on Christ. In doing so, a peace within every soul will be accomplished in a fallen world.

Isaiah 26:3 – Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.

If the thoughts are not properly employed, if we do not do all we can to fight, then the true religion of Christ cannot flourish in the soul. The mind must be preoccupied with sacred and eternal things as much as possible, or it will cherish things that do not belong in the minds of Christians. Both the intellectual and the moral powers must be disciplined to the will of God, and by doing so; they will strengthen and improve the mind each and every day with continual exercise, which will establish us and settle us in the truth.

1 Peter 5:10 – But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle [you].

To understand all the right things that we must do to settle ourselves in the Spirit of God through His Written truths, we must remember that our hearts are naturally depraved due to us living in fallen flesh, and so, we are unable, of ourselves, to pursue a right course when God is not abiding. It is only by the grace of God, combined with the most earnest efforts on our part, that we can gain the victory over the powers of this dark world.

The intellect, as well as the heart, must be consecrated to the service of God throughout our entire lives or we will surely fall into the hands of the enemy of souls and be destroyed. The world today is a visible evidence of what happens when we stray from God and reject Him. We must make our calling and election sure and be established in the present truth.

2 Peter 1:10-12 – Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know [them], and be established in the present truth.

If we are going to engage in the pleasure-seeking life of flesh, lack of caring and seriousness, along with mental and moral dissipation, which are flooding the world with their demoralizing influence and thus, we see what this world has become, we will depart from Christianity and make our bed with the enemy of souls. If we are not going to make our election sure and continue to follow after the ways of the world and abide with the character of the world, we shall surely sink and drown in the sea of separation from God where the world loves to swim. The world loving souls in the world today are clearly drained of anything good; they cannot understand the simple things of God. Every Christian should labor to press back the tides of evil and take the hand of God and walk with Him. We must daily be in the Word of God and applying all that we learn and through prayer we can overcome this world as Christ did. We must fulfill the path of the Sanctuary of the Lord or we shall surely be swept away by the evil influences that present to us every avenue that would corrupt our life.

Without the power of God’s grace and Spirit we cannot reach the high standard Christ has placed before us. Truly, there is a divine excellence of character that we are to gain through our daily battles and overcoming them in the classroom of the world, which will prepare us for the world to come. We must strive onward as Christian soldier and be ye perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 5:48 – Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

We must strive to attain the standard of heaven if we expect to be citizens of that kingdom. We are without excuse in this sinful world where we have much help from heaven to overcome. There are divine incentives which will urge us on to victory, which they will help the mind become well balanced in all things, and the restlessness of the soul will be banished; we will instead have tranquility in Christ. Let us have the mind of Christ.

Philippians 2:5 – Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

Finally my brethren in the Lord…

1 Peter 1:13 – Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
